May 5th, 2017

Several members checked out the two Fleet boats Shala and Ragtime that were open for touring on April 9 in Nanaimo. At our regular Fleet meeting on April 12 Tom Christensen gave a talk about using Sea Iq with Google Earth in areas without accurate electronic charts, and also discussed AIS receivers and transceivers. At the Fleet meeting on April 19, Daragh Nagle and I gave a presentation on Passage Planning from Victoria to Mexico, and requested feedback from members on the past Fleet year and suggestions for topics to start off the next Fleet year.

For the first time in many years we held a VI Fleet Rendezvous, and six boats (five of which plan to head offshore this year) met up in Montague Harbour on the weekend of April 21/22/23.

Mast climbing discussion

Participants discussed a broad variety of topics over the weekend, had a demonstration of several mast climbing techniques between rain showers on Saturday, practiced downloading weather maps and GRIB files on their HF radios, listened in on the Great Northern Boater’s Net on Sunday morning, and socialized over potluck appetizers, dinner and breakfast.

Breakfast potcluck

This was our last Fleet activity until September 27, 2017.

    Hi, Connie

My wife and I own a 30-footer, but plan to sell our house in the next month and start looking for a 40-45-foot cruiser somewhere in the world. We intend to move wherever the boat is, spend a few months fixing it up, then start cruising from there. Does this meet the criteria for joining Fleet? If so, could you send me some info, please. If not, any words of wisdom would be appreciated!
    Thx, Wayne
