When people talk about cruising in the Caribbean, they usually mean the Eastern Caribbean. the Windward and Leeward Islands from the Virgin Islands to Grenada. Stephen and Nancy Carlman have often enjoyed cruising in those islands aboard a friend’s boat.
When they exited the Panama Canal into the Caribbean in 2003 on their classic, wooden, keel-centerboard yawl, Fairwyn, they took a different route, one that encompassed pirates, fortresses, gold and silver, and ancient civilizations as they cruised along the eastern shores of central America from Panama to Mexico.
Follow them as they climb pyramids, bribe their way back in Guatemala from Mexico, and order a new heat exchanger using the only public phone in Placentia, Belize.
