Vancouver Hybrid Club Night – Crossing Oceans for Marine Conservation

Lauren Shea, a marine biologist, sailor, and scuba diving instructor, recently added ‘ocean rower’ to her title. As part of the team Salty Science [1], consisting of four women marine scientists, she embarked on an unsupported rowing expedition across the Atlantic Ocean in December 2023, to raise funds for marine conservation. After enduring 38 challenging days at sea on a 28-ft ocean rowing boat, her team celebrated a hard-earned victory, placing first in the Women’s class of the World’s Toughest Row – Atlantic 2023 [2] race and raising $267,000 for marine conservation initiatives.

Prior to her rowing expedition, Lauren’s maritime adventures spanned the globe. She sailed across the Atlantic twice, transited the Panama Canal, and crossed the Pacific Ocean as chief mate aboard a 112-ft schooner. Subsequently, she assumed the roles of skipper and expedition manager for sailing expeditions in the high Arctic (Norway and Svalbard Archipelago). All up she has sailed over 40,000 nautical miles and spent more than 200 days at sea.

Currently, she is finishing her Master’s degree at the University of British Columbia in fisheries management and marine policy. She is passionate about interdisciplinary research and believes that a more holistic approach to research, stewardship, and policy is necessary to tackle the most pressing environmental challenges.
