We are seeing more and more electric cars on our streets. Why not throw out the stinky diesel in our boats and sail cleanly and quietly?
We will look at motors and batteries, (re-)learn the physics of electricity, design electric boat powertrains and check out electric boats on the market. We will find out that it can definitely work but we’ll also have to discuss some challenges for the typical Pacific Northwest boater, especially as charging the batteries is involved. Will breakthrough inventions – which are in the news every day – overcome those challenges?
The answer to the question “is our next boat going electric” is … “it depends”. You will understand why, what, how and when. And, as physics are the same for boats and cars, you may even learn something for your next car purchase.

Andreas Truckenbrodt lives in Nanaimo, is a member of the Vancouver Rowing Club and the Gulf Yacht Club and the secretary for the Council of BC Yacht Clubs. He was responsible for electric, hybrid and hydrogen fuel cell cars at Mercedes-Benz.
