Heather Kao and her family set sail from Vancouver aboard their 45-foot junk-rig schooner Inscrutable, completing a year-long voyage around the North Pacific. Their route took them down the coast to California and Mexico, across to Hawaii, then north to Alaska and Haida Gwaii before returning home again. They discovered both adventure and simplicity – navigating remote waters, repairing at sea, and finding wonder in the vastness of the ocean. In this presentation, Heather shares stories from their journey to inspire others to chase their dreams, take bold steps toward offshore cruising, and discover the beauty that lies beyond the horizon. It’s a reflection on resilience, family, and the transformative power of choosing a life less ordinary.

Heather lives aboard Inscrutable with her husband and two children. She began sailing just 5 years ago and quickly fell in love with the freedom and challenge of life on the water. What started as a new adventure has become a meaningful way of life – one that continues to teach resilience, adaptability, and the quiet joy of living close to the sea. When she’s not on the water, Heather enjoys hiking, bouldering and biking. Professionally, Heather works in the marine insurance industry, helping others navigate their own boating journeys. For Heather, life afloat is about inspiring others to embrace adventure and find beauty in the unpredictable.
