The Voyage
On October 14, 1984, Peter Freeman set sail from Victoria BC for a solo non-stop circumnavigation aboard Laiviņa, a 32 foot sloop. To successfully conclude this endeavour, Peter used classical methods of navigation along with his experience, knowledge, and wits. He achieved this feat in 236 days, 10 hours, and 45 minutes. On the voyage, he encountered 12 gales, 2 storms, a broken self-steering rudder and used two miles of thread sewing up torn sails. He competed in an offshore sailing race from Dunedin to Oamaru, New Zealand taking line honours in the “Overseas Entry” class. Coming home across the Pacific, Laiviņa passed Mururoa Atoll one week after the French government exploded a Hydrogen bomb. Upon his arrival back in Victoria, Peter was greeted with the news that he had broken the existing world record.
