The January 24 meeting of the Vancouver Fleet of 2017 saw a full house in attendance for the first meeting of 2017. The program was Celestial Navigation in two parts with two presenters.
Dominique Prinet lead off with an interesting and humorous description of the history of Celestial Navigation and the development of angle measuring devices leading up to the sextant. He then explained the theory and practice of a noon sight.
After the break Dorothy Cunningham demonstrated the use of the sextant and then showed us how to record a sample reading and calculate a position.
The next Vancouver Fleet meeting will be on February 28 and will feature a hands-on session dealing with medical emergencies offshore.
