We had 24 sailors in attendance for the Vancouver Island Fleet meeting on November 16. The topic, Medical Preparations for Offshore, is always in high demand and there is always lots of material to cover (even without COVID-19 to consider). We are gifted on the Island to have Dr. Catherine Ascah with her history in family practice and travel medicine available to our group to enlighten us on the current state of medicine as it relates to our offshore adventures.
This year we had a bonus opportunity with a dentist in our midst as Devin Jones supplemented the evening with a detailed look at dental preparations and emergency resources currently available. Devin deserves huge kudos for his efforts as he produced this detailed and lengthy report with only a week’s notice while working full time and dealing with his vessel hauled out!
Beyond that Devin also participated in show and tell with his praise for Nigel Calder’s books addressing boat systems. Rob & Charlene Cormack volunteered for next month’s Show & Tell.
Shawn Wright volunteered to be the contact / coordinator for the growing group planning to circumnavigate Vancouver Island this year (many as a shake down prior to heading south). This group may grow to include the V.I.C.E. adventure.
December 9 will see the perennial return of Tony Gooch discussing Heavy Weather Sailing.
Daragh and I are putting the final touches on this year’s schedule.
