What a great start to the Fleet of 2026! The energy in the room was palpable, with 17 participants attending in person and another five joining via Zoom.
This marked Vancouver Fleet’s first hybrid meeting—and the first in-person Fleet gathering since the shift to COVID-inspired online sessions. Being together again brought a welcome sense of spontaneity and camaraderie that’s hard to replicate virtually. That said, the hybrid format had its own highlights: Vancouver Vice Commodore joined via Zoom for the first time and noted how much he enjoyed the lively group interaction and sense of community.
Fleet has always been about more than sharing and building knowledge. It’s also about connection, encouragement, and mutual support in pursuit of a dream that can sometimes feel daunting. Those connections have long been the heart of the Fleet experience.
Invited Guests
We were delighted to welcome three special guests: Stefanie and Torsten Schulz, former Fleet members taking a short break from their offshore adventure, and Rob Murray, an experienced offshore sailor, long-time BCA supporter, and a fount of wisdom. Both Stefanie and Rob shared stories from their voyages and spoke about how Fleet prepared them for the challenges of going offshore—emphasizing not only the knowledge gained but the lifelong community that continues well beyond the journey itself.
The Plan for Vancouver Fleet of 2026
Participants also had the opportunity to share and brainstorm their learning priorities for Fleet 2026. Former formidable fleet coordinator Cam McLean reminded everyone that Fleet is a participant-driven program:
“The value of Fleet comes from its members. Those who attend shape the program, take the minutes, share discoveries, and help create the experience.”
He also encouraged members to take part in VICE (Vancouver Island Cruising Experience), [1]a BCA event designed to offer a sampling of an offshore experience.
This year’s Fleet is being hosted by Rhonda Schuller, an active BCA member who lives aboard and singlehands her 40’ Hans Christian Christina. Rhonda brings a wealth of experience from her offshore sailing in both the South and North Pacific.
It’s not too late to join! If you’re dreaming of going offshore, Fleet 2026 offers the perfect opportunity to learn, connect, and be inspired. The Vancouver Fleet meets on the last Wednesday of each month. The next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 29, at 1930h. We’d love to see you there!
