Rigging Inspection and Maintenance

Ever look up and wonder about all that gear aloft? This hands-on course offers sailors a comprehensive look at how to inspect and maintain both standing and running rigging. Designed for those who own and maintain their own sailboat — or anyone eager to deepen their understanding of rigging systems — the session covers essential skills for proper inspection, maintenance routines, and offshore cruising preparation. Participants will also learn safe techniques for going aloft, both dockside and underway, including best practices for safety lines, bosun’s chairs, and tool management.

Topics include everything from mast inspection and tuning to identifying wear in fittings, connections, and rigging components. You’ll explore the differences between keel-stepped and deck-stepped masts, learn about anti-corrosive compounds, and review maintenance for spreaders, shrouds, halyards, and chain plates. The course also dives into running rigging, covering line types, strength, maintenance, replacement schedules, and inspection of systems like jib cars and cockpit adjustables.

About the Instructor

The course is led by Brent Jacobi, a seasoned rigger with over 25 years in the marine industry and a lifetime of sailing experience. Brent manages both the Rigging and Metal Fabrication divisions at Blackline Marine, bringing a wealth of practical knowledge and technical expertise to help sailors keep their rigs safe, reliable, and ready for sea.
