Pacific Island countries like Kiribati, Tuvalu and the Marshall Islands are existentially threatened by climate change and sea-level rise. Yet the people and the islands themselves are also more resilient than the bold-faced headlines about disappearing islands may have you think. In this presentation, Dr. Simon Donner, a climate scientist and professor at the University of British Columbia, will discuss the science of ocean warming and sea level rise, what it means for coral reef islands, and the opportunities and challenges facing local people.

Simon has been conducting field work in the Pacific region with local collaborators for the past 20 years. He was also a lead author on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recent Sixth Assessment Report and, until recently, co-chair of Canada’s Net-Zero Advisory Body, which advises the federal government on pathways to eliminating climate-warming emissions.
