The possibility of emergencies at sea can create a great deal of anxiety. Learn how to reduce anxiety by taking steps to reduce risk, preventing situations from arising and managing those that do occur. In this course you will learn what to do when things go wrong by looking at case studies such as the tragedy on the Picton Castle. Discussions will include fire, flooding, mechanical issues, medical emergencies and crew overboard. The course will also look at abandoning ship guidelines.
Ken Gillstrom will share his experiences and teach you strategies to prevent and manage emergency situations on board your own boat. Ken is a Sail Canada Advanced Cruising Instructor and has RYA Yachtmaster Offshore certification. Ken and his wife, Carol, set sail on Voyageur in June 2012 and sailed 35,000 miles in the following 25 months. Prior to this Ken taught intermediate and advanced sailing throughout the Great Lakes and Caribbean. During this total sailing time of 60,000 miles Ken has experienced and dealt with many emergency situations.
