Attendance at a prior BCA Basic Diesel course or a good basic knowledge of diesel engines is required. This course is intended for those who own and maintain their own sailboat, or those who want to gain a better understanding of diesel engines, including proper operation and maintenance.
Topics include:
- Review of fuel, cooling and lubrication systems
- Electrical system: batteries, alternators, AC chargers & inverters
- Battery servicing
- Various charging systems
- Drives: straight drive, v-drive, sail drives
- Shaft seals
I would be interested in this more advanced diesel cource but am cruising in Mexico right now. I have taken the basics a couple of times at various seminars (BCA, Gartside& Uvic spring to mind) one thing that was never covered was flushing and filling the cooling system. I would hope this is covered in this advanced cource. As I said I am cruising right now, would it be possible to get the step by step instructions from you? I have a Yanmar 4je diesel and the heater hose that circulates thru the hot water tank has a “T” already installed. Is it as simple as hooking a hose to the T and pouring the premix liquid into the heat exchanger?
Thank you for your time.

Hi Kim,
I will pass this question on to our Education Watchkeeper and see if he can get an answer for you. Unfortunately I do not know much about engines to offer an answer 🙂

Hi Kim
Yes. The cooling system is covered in more detail in the Intermediate course. There should be a description of this process in your engine service manual. It can be easily done, however , access is always a problem on a boat. Make sure you have enough empty jugs to drain the old coolant in to.
If you don’t have your service manual, check out this link

Hope this helps
