Isaak Haberman and Hayden Kuttenkeuler are marine biologists for Hakai Institute, a non-profit seeking to expand knowledge of coastal ecosystems in British Columbia. They work for a project called the Sentinels of Change Alliance, a partnership between Hakai and UBC that aims to assess how marine biodiversity is changing in the Salish Sea over the next 5 years. Isaak completed his undergraduate degree in marine biology at UBC and more recently his masters in marine ecology at California State University Monterey Bay. His research involved assessing how urchins living in intertidal ecosystems contribute to the loss of kelp forest ecosystems along the California coast. Hayden moved to the West Coast four years ago in pursuit of ocean ecology and understanding the complex relationship between coastal communities and their surrounding ecosystems. She was most recently a marine biologist and scientific diver at the Vancouver Aquarium specializing in cold saltwater species.
Isaak and Hayden’s talk will discuss the five aspects of the Sentinels of Change project including biodiversity monitoring, larval Dungeness crab population assessments, and intertidal and subtidal experimental approaches to quantifying biodiversity. This will include an overview of their approaches and some preliminary results. The Salish Sea has been an important subsistence and recreational resource for people in the area for thousands of years. In the face of a changing ocean climate, it is important to understand how the marine communities in the Salish Sea are responding.
