During the Commodore’s recent visit to La Paz, Mexico, Jennifer Handley had the honour of presenting members Debra Zhou and Rob Murray (Avant) with their Coastal 999 awards and “Doner” pins. This award recognizes a coastal (harbour-hopping) voyage outside Canadian territorial waters, where the shortest straight-line charted distance between the starting and ending port is a minimum of 999 nautical miles.
Awards are traditionally presented by the Past Commodore at each Chapter’s Christmas Social in December, but Deb and Rob were not able to attend, hence a special presentation in the cockpit of Good as Gold during Happy Hour on February 22. The ceremonial presentations of sailing awards to skipper and crew are a long-standing nautical tradition and a highlight of our December socials. The awards ceremonies provide an opportunity for the Association to recognize the achievements of its members, inspire the “Dreamers” and encourage the “Doers” to continue their membership while cruising. Details and criteria about BCA’s sailing and perpetual awards can be found here.
If you are eligible for an award or know another BCA member who is, please contact the Past Commodore, who coordinates the awards process and chairs the Awards Committee.
