VI Mid-Island Club Night – Ouzo or Raki

After buying his 40′ Halberg Rassy sloop, Ocean Dream, in Sweden in 2017, Kevin Bourgeois and his son Richard sailed south in May, through the Baltic Sea, across the Bay of Biscay and into the Mediterranean Sea. Kevin’s last presentation ended in Prevesa, in the Ionian Sea (Greece) in November.  A very fast-paced six months but his journey didn’t end there.

The Journey Continues

In 2018 Kevin resumed his journey throughout the Mediterranean as far as Turkey, back through Greece (when disaster struck), the Adriatic, the Western Med (including the Balaeric Islands), back through the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco and the Canary Islands. In 2020 Ocean Dream and its captain and crew crossed the Atlantic via the Cape Verde Islands to Barbados, St. Vincent and finally Grenada – just in time for COVID to shut everything down in March of 2020.

Biography

Kevin’s early sailing days started with the Navy Reserve in 1969 with a trip from Victoria to San Diego, Honolulu, San Francisco and back to Victoria. Following that great adventure, sailing was dominated by racing, through Nanaimo Yacht Club and other organizations.  They included 15 Swiftsure races and one Vic Maui race, along with lots of local races and four large boat regattas out of Seattle. Kevin then shifted towards cruising, with various west coast charters, plus a charter in Greece and two weeks in Norway with Mahina Expeditions. Along with retirement came the opportunity in 2017 to purchase Ocean Dream, which was based in Sweden. The deal was done and Kevin has been offshore cruising ever since. Between 2017 and today he has taken Ocean Dream from Sweden, around the Mediterranean Sea, down the west coast of Africa to the Canary Islands, across the Atlantic via the Cape Verdes, to the Caribbean, across to Panama, and up the west coast of Central America to Mexico. With Ocean Dream and family and friends as crew, Kevin is currently exploring Mexico.  Ocean Dream is currently located in the Sea of Cortez.

Our in-person club night is on October 17 at Nanaimo Yacht Club. Doors open at 7:00 pm, meeting at 7:30 and presentation will begin at 7:45 pm.

Come early to enjoy conversation and camaraderie. Due to recent policy changes at Nanaimo Yacht Club, there will be no bar service until further notice. Coffee, tea and water will continue to be served. It is hoped that bar service will be reinstated soon.
