03 Feb 2015 1900h - 2200h

The biannual Vic-Maui Race is not all about racing. Magnus Murphy will describe how a ‘Cruising Division’ entry can help prepare you and your boat for offshore sailing and propel your sailing abilities to another level. Magnus entered his 1992 Shearwater 39 cruising boat into the 2014 Vic-Maui race and successfully completed a most fantastic adventure.

The talk will discuss the challenges of preparing for the race, both the boat as well as finding and managing crew. The race experience itself will be discussed and relived through multimedia. Practical advice will be given regarding diverse topics like:

  • Navigating the North Pacific Ocean
  • Communications
  • Weather information gathering
  • Watch systems
  • Sail management

The talk will also address post-Vic-Maui options.

Even if you have no interest in actual racing, the talk will be of interest to all offshore sailors. A Vic-Maui Cruising Division entry deserves to be high up on the list of possible choices of how to reach the South Pacific.

Magnus Murphy joined BCA about ten years ago and is currently the Calgary Vice Commodore. Prior to his 2014 Vic-Maui experience, Magnus spent two full cruising seasons with his wife, Ronel, and two teenage – at the time – daughters in the Caribbean, eventually transiting the Panama Canal in 2011 to bring Losloper home to BC. As a family, they have also cruised the BC coast and up to Alaska, on a previous sailboat.
