The Vancouver Fleet group met online on March 25. The group welcomed new member Liam Quinlan and enjoyed a chat with BCA do-ers Alex Kao and Heather Batchelor aboard Inscrutable, at anchor in Hilo, Hawaii. Alex recommends the app No Foreign Land for cruisers.
Members Allan Berry and Cindy Wang head to Alaska in April while David and Darrell Farrow head to Alaska in May. Education Watchkeeper Kit Griffin announced the upcoming Rigging Workshop as well as his own trip around Vancouver Island in July and August on Kona.
Andreas Grunewald presented the evening’s program on OpenCPN vs Navionics. Andreas laid out the differences in the platforms and programs, highlighted advantages and disadvantages of both. He also took members through easy-to-follow instructions on how to download OpenCPN and access charts. Instructions included free NOAA charts, Canadian charts, Custom charts and examples of DIY charts. Andreas referenced Currents articles by BCA’s Rob Murray and Max Shaw on OpenCPN with SASPlanet charts.
The April 29 Fleet meeting will include a presentation by Brent Perry on converting boats to electric power. Boat tours at Spruce Harbour Marina will be offered just before this meeting from 6:30 to 7:30. The meeting itself will take place in the Spruce Harbour Lounge, hosted by Rhonda Schuller.
