The Course
This classroom-based 2-day course is intended for those who own and maintain their own boat or those who want to understand Diesel Engines, including proper operation and maintenance. Attendance in the Basic and Intermediate course is a prerequisite for any advanced coursework.
Course topics include:
- Review of fuel, cooling and lubrication systems
- Electrical system: batteries, alternators, AC chargers and inverters
- Battery servicing
- Various charging systems
- Drives: straight drive, v-drive, sail drives
- Shaft seals
The desk work includes samples of the Diesel Engine parts; handouts include diagrams of the Diesel Engine internals and related.
David West is a highly experienced and knowledgeable Diesel mechanic and instructor. He comes highly recommended by students who have attended his courses.
Good afternoon,
I would really like to attend some of the basic and advanced courses on diesel engines. I am unavailable for this round on Nov 2, as well as the courses on Nov 9 and 10. Would David be able to reach out to me to advise when he next plans to hold such courses? I live in Calgary but would be willing to travel to Vancouver to attend his courses. I need about two months notice to book time off from work. I could also attend courses in Victoria, or Comox, or Calgary, or really anywhere that these courses might be held. Thank you! Ryan

We work with David on his availability as he’s retired from full-time work. Prior to this October’s course he was able to run the same course in April this year— so our plan would be to run this again April 2025 depending on his availability.
If you’re available in Victoria, the BCA there run similar courses with Gartside Marine. Here is one from December last year:
