ONBOARD DISASTERS AND EMERGENCIES… What happens?… Which responses are effective?

PANIC can be the first response when an emergency or disaster strikes. Fires, holing the hull, through-hull fitting failures, dismasting, capsize and more.

In a series of controlled “experiments” on a 42ft sailboat, a crew affiliated with Yachting Monthly, from the UK, filmed detailed re-enactments of these worst-case scenarios. For each emergency, several responses are implemented, and the outcomes are analyzed. The knowledge gained is exceptional and can leave you a little breathless. SEEING these situations as they happen is a unique opportunity compared to hearing or reading about them.

The information is relevant to boaters at all experience levels, for sail or motor, big or small.   Many commenters said they gained valuable insight about the problems and the solutions. This changed their outlook on the “What ifs” of emergencies.

Join us on Zoom for a guided discussion lead by Barb Riley as we view selected video segments of the Crash Test Yacht.  Barb and her husband Graham started sailing on the BC coast in 1984. First a trailer-sailer and then, until recently, a pilot house North Sea 34. Looking back, she is astonished how many places they have enjoyed and experiences they have had.
