If you have never cruised outside of the Salish Sea’s comparatively protected waters, sailing the West Coast of Vancouver Island often provides a cold turkey introduction to conditions encountered on the open sea, including large rolling swells, sometimes boisterous wind and waves. Add fog and craggy reefs to the mix, not to mention the relative isolation and lack of cell service and, well, it can get interesting. This presentation will highlight our experiences, the splendid scenery, great sailing, delightful encounters with wildlife, stunning night skies, the quiet, and anchorages warm enough for swimming … these things all contribute to making this coast some of the best cruising we have experienced.

Presenters

After living in Thailand for a number of years, Jim Burgoyne and Lynne Picard set sail aboard Quiver, their Vancouver 27, to return home to Canada via the North Pacific. The three-year voyage included a year cruising in Japan and Korea, places not often visited by foreign sailors, and Jim’s solo 74-day Pacific crossing. After arriving home in 2011, they began creating their Salish Sea Pilot e-book cruising guides. Ongoing research for the guides continues to be an excuse to spend months each year exploring the Salish Sea aboard Silom, their Tayana 37, and their cruising grounds have expanded to include the northern BC Coast, Alaska and Haida Gwaii. After 13 years as liveaboards in Victoria Harbour, winter now finds them ashore in Nanaimo.
