VI South Hybrid Club Night – Race to Alaska with Team Ship of Fools

Royal Victoria Yacht Club Main Lounge or via Zoom

19 Mar 2024 1900h - 2130h

Members $5 / Non-Members $10

Peter McMartin

Kevin Greenwood was the skipper and Chief Fool of Team Ship of Fools in the 2023 Race to Alaska. Their team of three brothers, two sons and one all-suffering friend, raced the C&C 35 Mk II Hessian from Victoria to Ketchikan. 33 boats started, 18 finished. The Fools finished 7th, having only partly lived up to their name.

Kevin is a former naval officer and frigate captain, with over 1,600 sea days with the “Grey Funnel Line.” He has sailed all his life, frequently in traditional boats, and with a penchant for Type 2 fun. He has sailed with the Tall Ships, taught traditional longboat sailing, chartered here and there, and owned several boats, most lately Hessian. Having had a longstanding but generally healthy disdain for the racing crowd, he now finds himself, since leaving the Navy in 2009, an avid but entirely mediocre racer.

In 2019, he led a group of first-time sailors, new recruits to the Navy, in the Van Isle 360, placing an uncharacteristic 3rd (or was it 2nd?) in division onboard the RCN Sail Training Vessel Goldcrest. Kevin currently teaches ship handling and other command subjects at the Naval Officer Training Centre, and is active with the RCN Sail Training Organization.
