Peter McMartin

Former BCA Members, Nick and Jenny Coghlan, started sailing in the Gulf Islands aboard their Vega 27, Tarka the Otter and, in 1985 with only eighteen months of sailing experience, they circumnavigated via the South Pacific, Australia, the Cape of Good Hope and the Panama Canal, returning to British Columbia in 1989. Later, they bought a Vancouver 27 called Bosun Bird in South Africa and crossed the Atlantic from Cape Town to Brazil, spending a year in Patagonian waters before sailing across the South Pacific once again to New Zealand. They’re now back home on Salt Spring Island after sailing through many of the western Pacific Islands and Japan and spending several years cruising Alaska.  They  have 70,000 miles under their keel!

Their presentation highlights their cruise through the western Pacific to Kyushu and on into the Inland Sea – the Heart of Japan – since they found that Japan is not your average cruising destination. With every nook and inlet occupied by tiny fishing harbours, anchoring opportunities can be scarce. Many visitors find the language baffling, the bureaucracy intimidating. But the hospitality offered to the crew of Bosun Bird as they meandered for fifteen months was astounding. Nick and Jenny found that travel by sail offered them insights to an ancient culture that are afforded to few visitors that travel by more conventional means.

Between cruising adventures, Nick worked for the Canadian Foreign Service and is the author of three sailing-related books: Winter in Fireland – A Patagonian Sailing Adventure; Sailing to the Heart of Japan; and Under Wide and Starry Skies – Fifty Sailing Destinations in Seas Less Travelled. All three books are available via the usual online outlets and copies will also be available for purchase after Nick and Jenny’s talk.
