For years, the idea of taking a year off to sail the open seas was a distant dream. As our departure date approached, we turned that dream into reality. With Alex’s mechanical expertise and many years of sailing experience, and my newfound skills in offshore navigation and first aid, we prepared ourselves for an adventure of a lifetime. Leaving behind the routine of daily work, we embraced the unknown, ready to face the challenges and joys that sailing would bring. This journey is a testament to our passion for exploration and our desire to connect with the world in a unique way.

Preparing for the Voyage: Ensuring a Smooth Sail

Before embarking on our year-long journey, we meticulously prepared our sailboat, Inscrutable, to withstand the rigors of the open sea. We ensured the hull was freshly painted, and stocked up on essential spare parts, from engine components to plumbing supplies. We stocked at least two spares of everything that made sense and would fit, particularly critical items like zincs, spare lines, and autopilot parts. This foresight was crucial, especially given the remote locations we planned to visit, where access to specific parts might be limited. Our preparations were driven by the belief that being well-equipped would allow us to focus on the adventure ahead, rather than unexpected setbacks.

Crew or Not to Crew: Benefits & Challenges

Having crew can be both a blessing and a challenge, providing the opportunity for more rest on board, while also necessitating careful consideration of various factors. It is important to evaluate personalities to ensure a harmonious dynamic, as well as to prepare for the additional food and water requirements that come with more people. Timelines also deserve attention, since choosing the right weather window is crucial and should not be influenced by a crew member’s need to catch a flight home.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience while cruising without a crew, it is essential to establish a sleep schedule that accommodates everyone during the night watches. Alex and I have implemented a 3-hours on/3-hours off rotation during the evening hours, which has proven effective in maintaining our mental and physical wellness while keeping us alert and secure throughout our shifts.

The Art of Buddy Boating: Navigating Together

Buddy boating is a unique aspect of sailing that brings sailors together, fostering a sense of community and shared adventure. It offers the opportunity to experience the highs and lows of the journey with fellow enthusiasts, creating bonds that often last a lifetime.

While the companionship and added safety are significant benefits, buddy boating also presents challenges. Differences in sailing styles, decision-making, and schedules can lead to conflicts. However, with open communication and mutual respect, these challenges can be navigated successfully, enhancing the overall experience.

Weather Windows

Understanding and observing weather patterns is crucial for a safe and enjoyable sailing experience. Each sailor has unique preferences and comfort levels, making it essential to choose weather windows that align with your personal sailing style. Taking the time to sail at a pace that feels right ensures a more relaxed and fulfilling journey.

By carefully planning around weather conditions, you can avoid unnecessary risks and make the most of your time at sea. This approach not only enhances safety but also allows you to fully embrace the beauty and serenity of the ocean.

Health Preparedness: Essential Medications & First Aid

Preparing for a long journey at sea requires careful consideration of health needs. It’s vital to consult with a healthcare professional before departure to ensure you have all necessary medications and first aid supplies. This preparation is crucial, as access to medical resources can be limited while offshore.

Stocking up on essential medications and antibiotics can prevent minor health issues from becoming major concerns. Being proactive about health preparedness provides peace of mind, allowing you to focus on the adventure ahead without worry.

Savour the Journey: Embrace Every Moment at Sea

As we navigate the vast Pacific Ocean, each day brings new wonders and opportunities to connect with the sea. It’s essential to pause and appreciate the serene beauty that surrounds us, from the gentle sway of the waves to the vibrant sunsets painting the horizon. These moments of tranquility and awe are what make our journey truly unforgettable.

Savour the journey

Every mile we sail is a reminder of the freedom and adventure that the open sea offers. Whether it’s the thrill of spotting marine life or the simple joy of a cool breeze, cherishing these experiences enriches our voyage. Embrace the journey with an open heart and let each moment at sea inspire and rejuvenate your spirit.
