Yes, we did have a bit of rain (a couple of intense showers) but nothing like our cold, rainy first event last year, and even that was lots of fun (i.e. being cold together). This year we had lots of sun, warmth and a lovely rainbow.
Twenty-three members and friends came to Saysutshun (formerly Newcastle) Island on September 14 for an afternoon ‘BURP’. The food was great, the facilities were perfect for our group and the conversation was fun and energizing!
As Saysutshun Island is only accessible by boat, we had 5 attendees by ferry: Barrie and Sandra Letts’ grandsons plus Dee Logan who can be forgiven for not single handing from Maple Bay – especially seeing the wonderful food she brought! And Diane Milne who has recently relocated to Comox. We had several boats on the dock, a few on mooring balls, plus a few that crossed from Nanaimo Yacht Club or Townsite Marina in their boats/dinghies – a serious 15 minute passage!
We had one Vancouver Chapter boat (Heather Marshall on Tucana) and one boat from Victoria (Barrie and Sandra on Knot 2 Crazy); the rest were Mid-Island folk from Maple Bay and north.
No songs were sung (too early and not enough wine) but the conversation was great – tales from Diane and Dave Cherry plus Kevin Bourgeois who currently have their boats in Mexico, Doran and Shannon Jones who are getting ready to head offshore in the next year or so, Rob and Grace Dodge who gave supportive advice to Doran and Shannon, and the rest of us who just ate and ‘chipped in’.
We have decided that our Mid-Island BURP will continue next year and we hope to grow the event (rain or shine as we have a covered area). If you want more information contact Kate Swangard, Mid-Island Rep.
Great event, great article, great organizing Kate!
